A Good Woman

On Wednesday night, I saw A Good Woman
At first I thought Helen Hunt was miscast, not being known for femme fatale roles, but as the film progressed she was in fact perfect for a woman fading pretty with no other cards to play.

Scarlett Johansson is of course radiant, and subtle in her performance. Tom Wilkinson - is he in every film? - plays a nice guy in this one. And Stephen Campbell Moore who was adorable in Bring Young Things looked like he was recovering from a rough night all the way through this. He still looked rather sweet though (although one of my fellow cinema-goers disagreed with me on this point)

A Good Woman is a Good Film, although it does make one wish that people really were like that, quipping and punning all over the place. Of course, the problem with reproducing Oscar Wilde is that his aphorisms have been endlessly repeated, to the point that they don't sound plausible coming from these characters. But I dare say even at the first performance of Lady Windermere's Fan they sounded a tad too arch. That is the difference between Wilde and Noel Coward - Wilde's witticisms make him sound clever, Coward's lines make his characters seem witty.
