When Fast Food Life is Challenging
Overheard in New York
But then I shouldn't laugh as I apparently struggle with Blockbuster. I went and joined the local one the other day, and chose the DVDs I wanted to borrow. Stupid me, apparently - according to the 9 year old at the counter - I should have been looking for the unlabelled generic boxes BEHIND the ones with the film artwork on them. They're the ones to rent. And then he asked me to PUT BACK the ones I had brought to the counter, as he put it "just for reference". I have never seen such a stupid system in my entire life. Other video shops actually let you borrow the REAL BOXES. Or if they put the discs in anonymous boxes, they do that for you at the counter, when you are renting.
At least if they let people rent the discs with the real boxes it makes it obvious what's available and what is not.
I also enquired about the availability of a particular DVD. I was told that they used to have it, but there was a problem with the disc so they got rid of it, and they're not getting that one again. As the girl said, "it's a pretty old movie".
I said "Really? When did it come out on DVD?" - because the one I wanted was quite recent, and I thought maybe there had been some confusion with an older film that had a similar title.
"Oh," she said, looking at her computer screen, "it came out about a year and a half ago".
